PERLIMIX is a light weight Perlite based aggregate
which when combined with portland cement and water, produces an ultra light
weight concrete that is used for insulating roof decks and lightweight floor
fills, insulating structural rock decks, curtain wall systems and for a variety
of permanent insulating applications.
WHY
PERLIMIX?
World over building consumes 40% of
total energy generated and they are major contributors to the carbon emissions.
In order to reduce carbon emission, the concept of construction of green
buildings and use of green building materials is gaining momentum in our
country.
In India, our construction practices
involve reinforced cement concrete as the roofing element which is noted for
its high thermal conductivity. Therefore, proper treatment of the roof
structure plays an important role in providing comfort levels and reducing
cooling loads inside the building. Use of thermal insulation in roofs
significantly cuts down the heat gains through reduced conduction. Thermal
insulation plays an important role and reducing the U value for the roof
section. The function of roof insulation is to insulate the building against
heat in flow from outside during the day.
Further,
the upper roof surface is exposed for the longest duration directly to almost
intense perpendicular solar heat radiation. The heat accumulated on the roofing
material is transmitted gradually and ultimately radiates the heat in the room
living/working space, thereby increasing the inner warmth.
Especially in cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur,
Delhi, this phenomenon occurs even after sunset which is very commonly
experienced and so the heat keeps transmitting till late in the evening giving
a prolong effect. PERLIMIX provides an insulating sheath which intercepts and
combats the solar heat radiation and thus retards the heat from entering the
slab.
Conventional methods of curbing heat
are by fans, air coolers or air-conditioners which are the recurring energy
consuming methods. By incorporating a good insulating material like Perlimix
the heat transmission is reduced by about 30%, thereby leading to permanent
electrical energy savings. In order to ensure permanent savings in energy, even
ECBC CODE also has recommend the use of insulating material like Perlite for
roof insulation.
PERLIMIX is a very unique insulating material especially when studied in
comparison with other conventional insulating materials e.g. Vermiculite, EPS,
PUF etc. All the insulating materials are either used for cold (cryogenic) or
hot (thermal), whereas Perlite is the only insulating material which is used
for both cold as well as hot insulation.
BENEFITS OF ROOF INSULATION:-
Benefits
of roof insulation are manifold.
- Application of overdid insulation on roof can
bring down energy consumption air-conditioned spaces below roof.
- Roof insulation also has positive impacts on
thermal comfort of non air-conditioned spaces and can bring down the number of
discomfort hours. Energy modeling was carried out to quantify reduction in
discomfort hours. Summer discomfort hours are reduced by 10% compared to
conventional uninsulated roof.
- Roof insulation helps to protect the
environment.
- Roof insulation increases the value of home.
MIXING
PROCEDURE:
All concrete should be mechanically
mixed in Cement / Perlimix ratio (as indicated in table below) to produce a
uniform distribution of the materials with a suitable consistency and the
required as-cast unit weight. Excessive mixing should be avoided because of the
possibility of changes in unit weight and consistency.

NOTE
: Loose Bulk Density of PERLIMIX is 90 – 110 Kg/m3
Ideally
a 3 to 4 inch or 75mm to 100 mm thickness of PERLIMIX insulation is recommended
internationally.
